Welcome! This is one of the fastest growing breeds in the United States due to its
versatility and personality. For your education I’m listing some great resources to
learn more about the breed and about gaited horses in general. Finding Fox Trotter
trainers and resources for gaited horses aren’t as plentiful in Texas as in other parts
of the country. I hope the information below gives you a head start.
Easy - Gaited Horses
This book answers many questions about gaits, and how to
ride and train gaited pleasure horses.

Gaits of Gold
This site and the Debra Imus books give good fundamental information on all gaited breeds.
Her advice on conformation, tack and gaits is a great foundation for anyone interested in
gaited horses. Before you talk to trainers and/or buy horses or tack, I suggest reading her
books and taking a course.

Perfect Gaits
Rick Sermons is familiar with most of the popular
horse trainers and their techniques from Parelli to Clinton Anderson and others. His advice
on ground work and familiarity with gaited horses makes him a valuable resource. He’s not
aligned with a breed and doesn’t train for show, but is more focused on helping people bring
out the innate gaits in whatever breed they have and using ground work to assist problems.
Humane methods only. I’m including Rick because I found it very difficult outside Missouri
to find anyone knowledgeable about working properly with Fox Trotters.
